Dutch Baby Pancakes

What are Dutch Baby Pancakes? These are large, oven-baked pancakes originally from Germany. Other names for these pancakes include baked pancakes and puffed pancakes.

Only simple ingredients go into making this delicious treat. You can top these dutch pancakes with so many different toppings such as powdered sugar, fresh fruits, berries, jam, and maple syrup. For a more savory breakfast try serving with egg, avocado, cheese, and bacon.

This easy puffed pancake recipe is simple for cooks of all levels. It is helpful to have an electric mixer on hand for this recipe as well and a baking dish or pan suitable for high heat such as cast iron.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 4 eggs
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 2/3 cup flour
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Using an electric mixer, combine eggs, milk, and melted butter.
  2. Slowly begin adding flour and salt, mixing until fully combined.
  3. In a large cast iron pan, put 2 tbs of butter.
  4. Preheat oven to 450º F. When temperature is almost reached, place the buttered cast iron pan in the oven by itself allowing the pan to heat up.
  5. Once oven reaches 450º F, remove cast iron pan and pour in batter.
  6. Place back into oven and bake for 25 minutes. Avoid opening the oven during cooking time to prevent the pancake from flattening.
  7. Once top of pancake is golden brown, remove from oven, add toppings, and enjoy.
